I’ve never really used a computer for various minutes at a time at a chum’s house. I’ve been a Mac guy since 1992 after I began college and primary got into graphic design. i’ve got always hated Windows and i’ve always thought non-Macs felt like cheap junk, the interface always seemed difficult and clunky whether it was Windows 95 or XP. i’ve only tested Vista and seven that you can purchase until i ultimately bought the bullet and just decided to get this little netbook… because, let’s face it, Apple dropped the ball with that iPad crap.
Well, I’ve only had this thing for three days and it didn’t take long to get used to. Some helpful people online told me which freeware to get to take away the extraneous crap Best Buy had installed at the machine and apparently I’m good to compliment a pair free Antivirus programs. I probably won’t be downloading any .exe or .zip files from warez, porn or music stealing sites in this thing simply because I wouldn’t actually need to risk it; I’ll try this on my mac. Not that I try this kind of thing.
I’m undecided what that is appropriate for. I actually have a text editor now so i will be able to do a little HTML/CSS/PHP in a pinch, but I’m uncertain I’ll ever actually need to. Believe it or not, I just about got it simply to test websites at the fly with IE8… since I do website design for a living, it just becomes inconvenient to always depend upon browsershots, once I can check from side to side with my little buddy and notice what’s fugged up in Intercrap Exploder. It really works for that just fine. The portability is an added bonus! And the cost is ideal!
For those that desire to write their novel in Starbucks or those who waste money in this type of crap purely to browse cyberspace, this is able to be an exceptional choice! I’ll be taking this on long trips for immediate access to Google maps if i would like it. For others like me who’re not iPhone/Blackberry crazy, here is also useful for that sort of thing.
Youtube, Facebook, and pretty well any website I’ve tried (including some rather large ones I designed myself) look excellent in this thing. Fit at the screen well and never so small that it’s hard to read. It is a great little thing to look at videos on once you’re stuck somewhere with out a tv, too… unlike an iPhone, that is painfully small to observe anything on for greater than 3 minutes.
Keyboard is quality. Not junky feeling like most other PCs I’ve touched. When compared with the Acer, Dell and HP netbooks I’ve played with inside the store, this thing appears like a Rolls Royce or something. Nice, solid little machine.
On a broadband wifi, it’s as fast as that you would be able to ever want or need.
Toshibas don’t include lots of bloatware, either. I only needed to delete the precise Buy marketplace software and Norton Utilities.
Great battery life, great monitor brightness, color and clarity, Windows 7 is awesome!
All in all, a fantastic purchase. Very satisfied.

i bought this netbook to accompany me on every week-long road trip and having just returned from that trip, I’m scripting this review.
I had to be capable of access the net via WiFi during meal breaks and rest stops and at night in my motel room and the Toshiba performed this function well. I also expected to make use of this for watching YouTube, Hulu, CNN, etc… on the end of the on a daily basis and that’s where i used to be somewhat disappointed.
This is my first netbook and that i didn’t expect it to be the equal of a desktop machine or perhaps a laptop but i used to be pleasantly surprised at its functionality. The small screen is amazingly readable and the keyboard is superb. The most important disappointment for me was the audio. I wasn’t expecting theater-quality sound (really I wasn’t) however the little monophonic speaker inside this netbook can’t even compete with my Ipod touch. In my motel room, with the A/C running, it was impossible to listen to despite the amount at maximum.
The solution is to plug in a couple of headphones but there’s an issue with that too. When using the charger, the headphones have a slight 60 hertz background hum that’s very annoying while being attentive to audio books or quiet music. The hum is purely there in case you’re charging, so I did my book listening on battery power. My longest battery-powered session was 4 hours and then the charge indicator showed about 50% life remaining and that i was proud of that performance.
It’s a stunning nice machine but when I had it to do all over again, i might sacrifice some portability for audio that will allow me to listen without headphones.
i suspect it is a fantastic netbook. I played with several others but all of them felt very cheap to me and their keyboards especially felt like toys. The Toshiba definitely is a smaller keyboard so isn’t as nice to type on as a whole-sized laptop keyboard, but it surely is the most effective I saw on a netbook and is particularly usable with slightly being used to. i purchased this Toshiba for my mom who loves it. We’ve got an older Lenovo widescreen laptop it really is pretty large, but my mom loves how small and light-weight the netbook is and brings it to the table every morning while she reads the paper and has coffee. She still uses the Lenovo for typing long emails, but everything else she now does at the netbook. Understand that it comes with Vista Starter edition, that’s fairly limited with regards to functionality. My main complaint is that she desired to change the background and Starter edition doesn’t let you try this (although there are several small programs that let you do that, but they should run inside the background..normally only consuming not up to 1mb of RAM).
The mouse touch pad can also be very large in this Toshiba, bigger than the typical laptop. A number of the other netbooks had these raised dots at the touch pad that was a fascinating idea, but I just didn’t just like the feel of it.
I will surely recommend the Toshiba, and in keeping with what else I saw available at present, that is definitely my favorite.

Pros:

- Keyboard is surprisingly big. The keys you utilize to type are only as big as a laptops keys meaning i will type just as fast as i’m able to on my laptop or even my desktop.
- The screen is admittedly bright and crisp. Beats out my laptops 15.4″ screen for clarity!
- Windows 7 Starter runs significantly better than previous netbooks which had Windows XP. This thing boots fast and launches everything very quickly!
- Battery life is fantastic! Inspite of the screen on full brightness i’ve been watching flash videos and using mozilla firefox for hours.
Cons:
- Like every superstar computers it comes loaded with a gaggle of crap you don’t need. I quickly deleted norton antivirus and installed the free and robust microsoft security essentials. Which i’d add runs nicely in this netbook completed a deadly disease scan in under 20 minutes.
- The sole con is the sound. Although i’ll be ordering a usb powered logitech z205 speaker which clips to the highest of the netbook and offers marvelous sound in comparison to any laptops/netbooks onboard speakers.

I’m engaged on a writing project at the side and needed a netbook that i’ll carry around with me (to work, travel, etc.) without lugging around greater than was necessary. I took a visit to Best Buy to try the netbooks handy… Dells, HPs, Asus, Samsung, and this Toshiba netbook. With all honesty, this Toshiba NB255 had the good keyboard, in comfort, style, and serve as. i might have bought it right then and there but checked Amazon and it sold for $40 less (on the time). Now it sells for $60 less on Amazon.
One piece of recommendation: BUY THE 2gb MEMORY UPGRADE. In the event you don’t, you’ll be watching for programs to launch for much longer than you have to. Once I received my 2gb Ram within the mail, I slid and popped it in (never did this before) and VIOLA! Processor speed was twice as fast. Lookup on Youtube for tips about replacing RAM on your netbook.
Also, I had a Forrest Gump moment once I took this netbook out of the box for the primary time… “This COM-pew-Tor is awful small Lieutenant Dan!” It’s built sturdy and feels tough otherwise. Webcam is superb – video appears pretty clear however the built-in microphone is horrible. You must purchase a separate headset. Speakers aren’t optimal but what would you predict from a $300 COM-pew-Tor? Additionally, you will have to purchase a separate mouse since the built-in trackpad and buttons are so close together, you’re sure to develop cramps on your hand after an hour of web browsing.
The only downside to this computer: Battery life is “OK”. I notice after I take the AC Adaptor off the pc, a message pops up at the screen saying the pc is almost out of battery power, although right beneath that message, it states 100% charge. Retarded. And don’t believe what they are saying… this computer is sweet for three to 4 hours of vigorous typing and lightweight online browsing – despite power saving “ON”.
I installed Linux Mint in this netbook and refuse to take advantage of Windows 7 for any lengthy time period. Overall, this netbook is a keeper… hasn’t failed me yet. i might recommend this to anyone who can’t afford a Macbook (including myself) and buying a light-weight netbook alternative.
Additional note: SHAME at the US Postal Service for not delivering my netbook. At the USPS tracking website, they tagged my package as “DELIVERED”. I waited two days and still no package. i ultimately called them they usually gave me some doosh-bag excuse a few lost USPS package scanner that went rogue and they’d come back to me by 5pm that day with a whole report. Keep in mind that, they never called me back.
KUDOS to Amazon for replacing my netbook IMMEDIATELY. They overnight shipped it FEDEX (FREE) and said “sorry!”. I received their FEDEX package ahead of i used to be alleged to go on an extended trip (and needed to do a little writing). i used to be blown away with their customer support and quick replies / remedies. Great job, Amazon.
Wanted a back up for my old laptop and decided to get a netbook. Was skeptic concerning the small screen at the beginning but got used to it with time.
Has excellent battery life and am glad about that because i used to be really particular about battery life.
The down side is that the quantity is extraordinarily low so I usually use headphones.
As per speed, it truly is ok though it usually is slow every now and then, I intend to upgrade memory because I read in other reviews that after you upgrade the memory, it’s quite fast.
The keys are like normal laptop keys although the back space key would be stiff in some cases but its not bad, i’m able to work with it.
I was worried concerning the external lid once I got it but if it came, I fell in love with it as it is extremely chic!!!! Its very light which makes it handy.

I have big hands and the keyboard is set 1 inch wider than most
mini’s. Im running dual boot and feature shrunk the windows 7 partition
down to 40Gigs, installed EasyPeasy linux and updated the sound driver and upgraded
the memory to 2Gigs. Its a decent travel PC no complaints.
Pros: Large trackpad
Cons: 1) even though it comes with the N455 CPU, it doesn’t include DDR3 ram. Why should we care? Toshiba crippled the program by way of a motherboard that only accepts DDR2 ram, that’s being phased out. Whenever you check current ddr2 ram prices, they have got gone up by greater than 50% inside the last year. Since ddr2 will eventually be not manufactured, don’t expect the costs to fall anytime soon. This translates to raised costs for the shopper should they choose to upgrade.
2) It struggles even running Office 2010 e.g., it pauses after a pair sentences to “think” when typing on Word. Very annoying. The 1 GB ddr2 ram is inadequate for this task.
3) Battery life isn’t what Toshiba claims it to be. On it’s power-saving mode, i will be able to only get 5 hours max. from an absolutely charged battery. It isn’t 8 hours. Leaving it on your car in 85 degree weather tends to empty the battery even further. Be prepared to locate an outlet to your power supply or discover a spare battery.
4) Glossy screen makes it difficult to read out in day light (e.g., typing at an open-air cafe) and attracts fingerprints.
5) Windows 7 starter is extremely limited.
